Back-to-School Air Quality: Protecting Your Home

With kids heading back to school and August routines picking up, families naturally spend more time indoors. While you’re busy with school lists and getting everyone out the door on time, it’s easy to forget about one important part of a healthy home: your indoor air quality.

After a long summer with the windows closed and the AC working overtime to fight off the Florida humidity, your indoor air can start to feel stuffy and full of things you don’t want to breathe in.

How to Protect Your Home from Late-Summer Dust and Mold

Let’s look at how late-summer weather affects your home’s air and what you can do right now to keep your family breathing easy as the school year gets underway.

The “Closed House” Effect

In the thick of a Florida summer, most homes stay closed up for weeks at a time. The EPA says indoor air can actually be two to five times more polluted than what’s outside. Every time your AC kicks on, it stirs up dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and even chemicals from cleaning products, sending them through your ductwork again and again.

Humidity and Hidden Mold Growth

If your AC is getting older or isn’t quite the right size for your home, it might have trouble keeping humidity below 50 percent. When the air stays damp, mold and mildew can start to grow inside your ductwork and around vents. That’s when you might notice more morning sniffles, coughing, or allergy flare-ups, especially in kids.

How to Upgrade Your Home’s Air Filter System

Better Filters

Standard fiberglass filters might be cheap, but they only catch big stuff like hair and don’t do much for dust, pollen, or bacteria. Upgrading your filter is a simple way to make a big difference in your home’s air.

For example… try switching to a pleated MERV 8 or MERV 11 filter. These filters catch tiny particles, allergens, and dust mites before they ever reach your living spaces.

Note: Be careful with anything higher than MERV 11 unless your HVAC pro says it’s okay. Thicker filters can slow down airflow in older systems, and while you might breathe better, your AC won’t!

Air Purification

For even more protection, you can add a UV air purification light inside your air handler. This kind of system zaps mold, bacteria, and airborne viruses before they ever make it into your vents.
