How to Keep Your AC Running During the Hottest Sarasota Days

When the Florida heat index climbs into the triple digits, your air conditioner becomes more than a luxury. It is essential for comfort and safety. In a July heatwave, your AC works harder than ever, running long cycles just to keep your home comfortable. This extreme workload is exactly why so many systems break down during the hottest weeks of the summer.
The good news? You don’t have to just sit back and hope your AC makes it through the hottest days. We have some great tips on how to keep your AC running during the dregs of the Sarasota summer.

5 Summer HVAC Survival Tips

There are a few simple and effective steps you can take now to reduce strain on your system, lower your electric bill, and avoid a late-night breakdown.

1. The 30-Day Filter Rule (No Exceptions)

In the winter, you might be able to change your air filter every few months. In July, that is not enough.
A dirty filter makes your system work much harder, forcing the fan motor to pull air through with extra effort. This reduces airflow, increases your energy bills, and can even cause your indoor coils to freeze.
  • What to do: Check your filter every 30 days and replace it if it looks gray or dusty.

2. Clear the “Breathing Room” Around Your Outdoor Unit

Your outdoor condenser unit has one job: to release the heat it collects from inside your home. If it is surrounded by overgrown plants, weeds, or yard equipment, the heat cannot escape as easily.
  • What to do: Go outside and make sure there is at least a two-foot clear space around every side of your outdoor unit. Trim any branches that hang over it.

3. Keep Your Drain Line Free of Algae

Sarasota’s high humidity means your AC removes gallons of water from the air each day. This water drains through a PVC pipe. Because the pipe is warm and damp, algae and mold can grow inside and eventually cause a clog. If you have a safety float switch, a clog will shut down your system right away to prevent flooding.
  • What to do: Find your indoor drain line access point, which is usually a T-shaped pipe near your indoor unit. Pour a cup of regular white vinegar down it once a month. This will kill algae before it can cause a clog.

4. Adjust Your Thermostat Strategy

It is tempting to set the thermostat to 68 degrees after coming home on a hot day, but your AC will not cool your house faster by setting it lower. It will just run for a longer time.
  • What to do: Keep your thermostat at 78 degrees when you are home, and raise it to 82 when you are away. Each degree you increase reduces the strain on your system and can save you about 3% to 5% on cooling costs.

5. Give the Coils a Gentle Rinse

Over time, the outdoor coil collects dirt, pollen, and salt from the air. This buildup acts like insulation and keeps heat from escaping.
  • What to do: Use your garden hose to gently spray the outdoor unit from top to bottom and wash away any salt and dirt. Do not use a pressure washer, as it can damage the aluminum fins.

When to Call in the Pros

These DIY steps can help your system last longer, but some problems need a professional. If your system makes odd noises, blows weak air, or cannot reach your set temperature during the hottest days, you should schedule a professional checkup.
